Shanma Ahmed is a senior designer at the Volcanic Malaysia office, in Kuala Lumpur. In our latest blog post, Shanma talks about her experience as a woman in the technology sector, joining the Volcanic family and how she found her niche in design.
“At the age of 18, fresh out of high school in the Maldives, I moved to Malaysia and started a Diploma in Information Communication Technology. By the end of the two year course, my interests lay in designing interactive digital interfaces so I decided to pursue a specialised degree in Multimedia Technology.
After graduating with a first class degree, I continued to hone my skills in UI/UX design and creative media, and gained experience in the multimedia industry. I then discovered Volcanic was hiring and gained the opportunity to join the team and enhance my career even further, with the invaluable support of Volcanic I soon had a key role in mentoring and leading the design team here in Kuala Lumpur.
“Being a female in the tech industry is a challenge because we have to try that much harder to be heard or valued for our knowledge. It’s great that Volcanic is actively working to reach a 50/50 gender balance in the workplace; employment quotas pioneer change and without them it’s likely that much of the technology sector will remain insular and male-dominated.”
