Volcanic's new operations director, Ben Easterbrook, talks about his fast track route to promotion through the Volcanic talent management programme
I’ve had my own incredible journey since joining Volcanic two years ago as a recruitment website designer - which culminated a couple of weeks ago in my presenting to an audience of government officials including the Rt Hon Philip Hammond, international dignitaries and ambitious technology businesses on a landmark trade mission to China.
It’s been a fast track career path and testament to Volcanic’s strength of employer brand proposition in recognising and supporting talent.
Volcanic recognised my ability in project management, which in just two years has resulted in my becoming Operations Director. Last month I travelled to China on a government-backed trade mission with the goal of building relationships with investors, attracting international investment to the UK and promoting British business growth on the global stage at the Shenzhen Stock Exchange.
Shaping the future of the business
I joined Volcanic at the end of 2015 as a senior designer, from a background in graphic design, but had felt almost stifled in my career up to that point. I’d found the more formal structures and frameworks that set out to define a career path from the outset restrictive.
Since I joined just over two years ago, the company has grown from 20 to more than 80 people, and my role has grown accordingly. From heading up the company’s design function and managing a team of two, I’m now a member of the senior management team within the business and have an influence in shaping the company’s strategy.
Volcanic offers a completely different approach from the norm. I’d describe it as starting with a clean slate - I had no experience in recruitment website design but it’s all about how you apply yourself and show your aptitude for the opportunities offered.
Hard work and ability are recognised and, with the right attitude and desire to learn, you can progress extremely quickly - and not only gain valuable experience but also develop a skill set that plays to your strengths.
Neil Pickstone, co-founder of Volcanic, commented: “When we’re recruiting, we typically look for talented individuals who are highly motivated self starters with a great attitude. Our approach is fluid. We identify a person’s strengths and let them flourish in a role that suits them, rather than shoehorn a person into a role that doesn’t match their skills or, critically, their aspirations.
“As a business, we’re good at what we do - and we’re good at recognising and cultivating the talents of our people. Many of our senior team bring fresh ideas and innovation to their role - and I believe our growth is down to the entrepreneurial and disruptive nature of our business.”
