What Makes Good Recruitment Design?

Over the past couple of weeks we have been working a lot with new and existing clients on User Experience (UX) and implementing some of the key design principles which we have learnt over the years. 

We have now built hundreds of recruitment websites and are currently working on many more, so we know a thing or two about candidate and client engagement. This blog covers some simple principles, which when followed well, can lead to big gains in engagement.

Here are some ideas and principles: ​

Nobody reads - well, not everything. Do the drunk test: imagine you have had a tipple or two too much, squint, then use your website; you'll soon see that a box with a colour in it means press! This is a fairly crude but effective test to ensure that the websites key areas stand out - you might want to give it a try now.

Following that, the principles cover the following: -

  • Clear contact points - give the user a clue as to how to contact you, but don't bombard them with too many options that they get confused by.
  • Use colour well - Make buttons, and do not use too many colour variations. Less is more with colour in most cases.
  • Clear signposting - tell the user to go here and do this - simplicitity is vital.
  • Ask a little often - small forms that ask the minimum but remember small steps.
  • Create urgency and reward users - if you do this then you'll get that. Reverse thinking also being if you don't do this then you won't get that.
  • Avoid confusing Icons - I hate websites where the designers have decided to go icon mad, and leave the users guessing what it means! If you use icons, make sure that there is a description under or next to it which explains what it does.
  • Multi-Device - Designing a website has changed a lot over the last 5-8 years. One of the big changes is designing for multiple screens (mobile, tablet and desktop). From the outset, it's important to think how the website will look on different screens - couple this with the above points also and you should hopefully see that applying 'desktop' principles to mobile is just as important!

There are many other elements to the design process that are very specific to the recruitment sector, however, the above principles when executed well has helped our recruitment clients get some very impressive results.
